Backpacking Essentials Ideas

Here's my list of backpack (and out of backpack) essentials, so if you're entertaining the idea of a long-distance backpacking trip whether it be road or trail, maybe this could be of some help. All of the following items fit comfortably either in my pack, on my pack or on my person.

1. Kelty Redwing 50 Internal Frame Pack

You have to have something to haul all of your crap around in, but there's no use in some 6000 ci monster on your back. At 3100 ci this one is perfect. Tough as nails, plenty of room and hydro compatible

2. ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.5 Tent

Your econo-lodge out there, great quality for the price, easy set up and fairly roomy inside. Packs up small and weighs in at 3.5 lbs.

3. Ledge Sports FeatherLite +20 F Degree Ultra Light Design, Ultra Compact Sleeping Bag (84 X 32 X 20)

Rated for +20F, but with decent layering it's helped to keep me warm in single-digit temperatures. If you're a desert rat, this is a great year-round bag. Packs up small and weighs in at 3.25 lbs. Stuff sack has adjustable cinch-straps, or at least mine did.

4. Thermarest Compressible Pillow

At least with some head/neck support you won't wake up wishing your neck was broken, if only to distract yourself from the pain. For more information, click here

5. Mountain Hardwear Softshell jacket Men's Android Jacket otter

Ok, I hate wilderness chic. But quality matters. And with some brands it's not just a name. Best lightweight jacket I've ever owned. Perfect for windy and chilly conditions and with proper layering it's good all the way down to zero. Click here to buy

6. Woolrich Rothrock Wool Crew Sweater - Men's

75% wool (or more) sweater combined with a a good lightweight outer shell is all the upper layering you'll need even when it's REALLY cold. I own two of these particular sweaters and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

7. ExOfficio Men's GiveNGo Boxer Brief

One of the coolest items you'll find on this list. ONE PAIR easily takes the place of five pairs of regular underwear. As gross as week old underwear might sound, you can wear these for days on end and still be good to go. That's what they're made for.

8. Patagonia Men's Javelina A/C Hiking Shoe

My favorite pair of all-around shoes. Trail, pavement..no matter. Unbelievably tough.
